Welcome to BzLiteracy

This is a resource page. It will let you access the handouts and webpages we'll use 1st semester. You will use it whether we are on-line or face-2-face.
Your teacher will probably teach lessons in a different order. Be sure to check which handouts you need for the next lesson. Print them. If you don't have a printer at home, you can print them cheaply at a convenience store. If classes are at Miyagi Gakuin, your teacher will give you copies.

Lesson handouts and links
#1. Read and meet. A few times a semester, the class will be time for you to read. You will also meet with your teacher to talk about what you are reading. you will also talk about your reading goals.
Most of your reading will be outside of class. If you are using Xreading, you can often listen to the book. Check the listening logo at the top of bottom of the page. On MReader books, check the back cover or title or content page for information.

#2. Let's go to the library. If classes are face-2-face, we will us this class to go to the library. We have over 6000 "easy English" books in the library. You'll be able to find books you want to read. Your teacher will tell you where to meet.
#3. Anime in English. Do you like anime? Have you ever watched an anime in English? This class, we'll wath Totoro in English. You know the story. Just relax and enjoy it.
Note to teachers: We have two copies of the video. Coordinate with the other teachers. Probably 2 classes can watch in one large classroom. If classes are on-line, wait with this until we are back face-2-face. |
#4. Creative Business Cards In Japan, most business cards (名刺) are similar. But what if you could make your own "creative business cards." You'll see some examples, then create your own.
Click HERE for the lesson. How creative can you be?

#5. Commercials and emotions. Whenever you see a TV commercial or a print advertisement, there is a good chance the company is appealing to your emotions. Learn how.

t#6. Reading magic. Learn a magic trick. Surprise your friend. First, work in a pair. Both of you download the SAME handout. A's, download Handout A HERE. B's download Handout B HERE. Read the introduction at the top. Cut the sentences apart. With your partner, underline the words that tell you about "order." ("first, next, after you ..."). Put the sentences in order. Figure out the trick. PRACTICE. (Hint: talk while you do it. It makes it harder to notice your "secret" moves). Now change parters. A works with B. Show her the trick. Can she figure out how you did it?
Note to teachers: We have materials to go with this lesson. Coordinate with other teachers so only one teacher is using them on a given day. We have one extra trick for you to use as the example. Talk to Marc for more information. Teacher lesson plan HERE.
#7 "The Girl Effect (Click HERE)" and "Unlock the intelligence, passion and greatness of girls. This is a 2-part lesson about girl's education (You can do both parts in one period). Perhaps start with small group discussion about why they chose a women's college. Then do the first part, "It takes a girl." Use THIS HANDOUT. You might want to slow the video down to 75% to make reading easier. After that, have them watch the TED Talk Leyman Gbowee. The Ted Talk is HERE. The task sheet is HERE. Suggestion: break the TED Talk into 3-minute (or so) parts. First play each part with Japanese subtitles. (Change subtitle with the "speech bubble" icon with 3 dots, bottom right. Let the students discuss what they understood in pairs. Then play the same part with English subtitles. Give them time to think how the ideas relate to Japan. Extra information: Girl Effect Fact Sheet

#8. Quick business readings. This is a series of short (250 - 400 word) readings on interesting business topics. Have students do them in pairs. They read the text and answer the questions. The first few questions are "literal comprehension." The other questions take the topics deeper.
The lesson is HERE. You'll need a computer or your smartphone.
Note to teachers: If you are not teaching Gendai Business students, you might want to focus on these stories which have feminist themes (a good follow-up to the previous lesson). What's in a name, Lady Doritos, Whiskey drinkers, Subaru. Note to Gendai Business teachers, consider repeating this lesson 2nd semester, but focus on the feminist lessons.

#9. Toyoko Inn
Did you know that the CEO of the Toyoko Inn Hotel Chain is a woman. And women are very important in how the company operated.
The lesson is HERE. It is mostly for Gendai Business students but other students might be interested in the feminist side of the story.

#10 Meditation. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce mindfulness, but, I hope in a way that is "less strange" than many people imagine. TEACHER: prepare some dried blueberries, one for each student. Play the "Raisin meditation" video HERE. (be sure to turn on the subtitles. After that (when they know the general idea), give out the blueberries. Lead them through the meditation. The Blueberry meditation script is HERE. (Note: I use blueberries instead of raisins. A lot of people don't like raisins. You can get dried blueberries at many supermarkets including AEON (Nakayama) and Seikyo (just south of AEON). Then go on to the Loving Kindness meditation. Have them read the handout HERE.
Either lead them through the meditation or play THIS VIDEO as they do the activity.

#11. Yoga. If your students enjoyed the UPLOAD IMAGE
meditation activity, they might want to try yoga. We have 2 sets of Yoga cards so make sure not all teachers want to use them on the same day. Each student needs one card. The handout is HERE. The cards are in C511 (ask Marc). Either make sure you have a classroom big enough for them to spread out mats (there are mats in the back of C511) or only use cards with poses you can do standing up.

#12. Thai massage. Each pair needs 2 handouts (I print them on B4 paper), a scissors and a glue stick. Handout 1 is HERE. Handout 2 (with pictures) is HERE. Scissors and glue sticks are in C511. Again, make sure you have enough room to spread out so they can try the activity. Go over the vocabulary on the first page to start. Have them work in pairs. Enjoy.
Teachers, the lesson plan is HERE.

#14. Critical thinking #1. Creative thinking is important. See how creative you can be. Work with a partner. A, download HANDOUT A. B, download HANDOUT B. When you finish, check the ANSWER KEY. Each pair needs 2 handouts (I print them on B4 paper), a scissors and a glue stick
#15. 8 easy, interesting things to do to use English. It is almost time for vacation. But I hope you won't take a vacation from English. HERE are some interesting things to do for fun in English. I hope you enjoy them.
