Before we start. Work with a partner. How many emotions/ feelings can you name in English? Write them.
)Now watch it again. Which of these do the show?
- Google search - documents - dictionary -job search information - maps - math - shopping suggestions - spelling correction - translate - travel assistance.
A search engine really isn't that exciting. Notice how the story made you interested.
(Thanks to Curtis Kelly for suggesting this ad.)
Video #2: McDonald's Taiwan
Watch THIS ad. Then retell the story with your partner. What emotion(s) do the people feel? What do you feel? Notice the story really is not about McDonald's products. It is all about feeling.
Video #3
What's going on here? This is "emotional marketing". They aren't selling you a product directly. They are creating an emotion and the connecting their product (the search engine, the McDonald's brand) to that emotion. Watch this short "What is emotional marketing" video. Turn on the subtitles (CC). Press the "pause" button to give yourself time to read. (Note: These are computer-generated subtitles so there are mistakes. Just try to understand the main ideas.) You might want to watch it more than once. Talk about it with a friend.

HERE is a link to that marketer's site. There are many other examples and "mini-lectures there.
Now back to the commercials. Notice how they create the emotion IN YOU to sell their product or idea.
Video #4. Job interview
Watch this. Notice your emotions. When do you know what they are advertising? Retell the story. Note: the English version has disappeared. It is in Spanish. But you will still understand the story.
Video #5 Movie theater
Retell the story. When do you know the reall purpose of the ad? Notice your emotions. Would this make you change what you do?

Video #6 I'd like to order...
Watch it. Talk about the meaning. Notice that the story isn't really related to the product.

Do you understand the joke? Is it funny? Notice the story is a metaphor (比喩). Metaphor is used in storytelling to say things indirectly. Do you understand the metaphor? The joke is based on a sexist stereotype? As a woman, does it make you feel angry/bad or not?
Video #7 In the bush.
Watch and retell. Notice your emotions.

Video # The Best Men Can Be.

Thought I had to share this one with Naomi Osaka.
What Japanese commercials do you like? Why? What emotions do they make you feel?
Mapping emotions in the body.
This is not a commercial. It is a video from the America Museum of Natural History. It show how the mind and body interact with emotions. I found it interesting and hope you do, too. Do the images match your imagination?
