This is a resource page. It will let you access the handouts and webpages we'll use this semester. You will use it whether we are on-line or face-2-face.
Your teacher will probably teach lessons in a different order. Be sure to check which handouts you need for the next lesson. Print them. If you don't have a printer at home, you can print them cheaply at a convenience store. If classes are at Miyagi Gakuin, your teacher will give you copies.

Lesson handouts and links
#1. Read and meet. A few times a semester, the class will be time for you to read. You will also meet with your teacher to talk about what you are reading. you will also talk about your reading goals.
Most of your reading will be outside of class. If you are using Xreading, you can often listen to the book. Check the listening logo at the top of bottom of the page. On MReader books, check the back cover or title or content page for information.

#2. Making better PowerPoints. You are a business student. You really need to be able to present well. You will learn about a slide design called "Presentation Zen." You'll need a PowerPoint that you have made (any topic is OK). You will change it to improve the design.
We will use a video.
HERE is a handout that will help you understand the video. The back of the handout has many useful links.
HERE is a handout with some main design points.
And HERE is a video with Marc explaining the design points and how he changed his own PowerPoints after reading Presentation Zen.

#4. Storytelling Storytelling is a useful skill. If you can do it well, it will help you work with customers. Practice using your voice. HERE is the handout.
Practice enough so you enjoy telling stories. |
#5. Five pictures: Good things in my life. What are the really good things in your life? What makes life worthwhile? Before our next class, please take 5 pictures of good things in your life. Use your smartphone. In class, you will share the pictures. Important: Don't take many pictures and choose 5. Only take 5 pictures. That is to help you slow down and really NOTICE what is good. The handout explaining this activity is HERE. One exception to the "take new pictures" rule. If you don't live at home but want to include pictures of something from home (your mom and dad, your pet, etc.), you can use those pictures. This is a positive psychology activity based on an idea from Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky.
#6. Native American Indian stories. Have you heard of "the 10 commandments"? The video above shows you the Native American commandments. Watch the video. If possible, discuss them with a partner. Do you understand them? Do you follow them?
Have you seen an Indian "medicine pipe" (also called a "peace pipe" in movies, pictures or in C511? HERE is the story (audio file) of where it came from. And HERE is the handout for the students
There are many Native American Indian stories. Click HERE for the handout. If you do this lesson at school, your teacher will give you the stories. If you do it online, try some of THESE stories. #13. 8 easy, interesting things to do to use English. It is almost time for vacation. But I hope you won't take a vacation from English. HERE are some interesting things to do for fun in English. I hope you enjoy them.
#14. Power Poses Power poses are physical positions. The idea (backed by controversial research) is that making your body into a large position increases power (testosterone) and lowers cortisol (the stress hormone). Smaller body positions do the opposite. I teach it, asking the student to notice whether or not they feel a difference. If they do, they have a tool they can use in stressful situations (job interviews, before big tests, presentations, etc.). Before class, I have them watch Amy Cuddy's TED talk on the subject with the Japanese subtitles. In class, I use THIS POWERPOINT, stopping in the middle to have them watch the TED talk with English subtitles. During the activity, they work in groups. Initially, they are in a group that has the same power pose, using THESE SCRIPTS. They rehearse, then the regroup and teach their pose to a new partner. Finally, we take it a step further using a "linguistic self-distancing" technique based on Ethan Kross's (Univ. of Michigan) research.
